If you could be anywhere this weekend, where would it be?

A grid of travel photos: a palm-lined resort pool, surf breaking on dark volcanic rock, a safari truck silhouetted at sunset beside an acacia tree, the Sydney Opera House at golden hour, a cobblestone cafe street, and a lantern-lined lane in Japan

I asked a question this week that I ask my clients all the time, usually in the first five minutes. If you could be anywhere in the world this weekend, where would it be? No budget, no logistics, no asking for time off. Just the place.

People answer fast. That’s the point. The answer that comes out before you have time to think is usually the trip you actually want, and it is often the one that has been sitting on the back burner for years.

What your answer is telling you

A beach. Caribbean, toes in the sand, a drink with a paper umbrella in it. If this is your answer, you’re tired. You want a trip where the hardest decision of the day is pool or ocean. Good news: of the six, this is the easiest to make happen and the shortest flight from Houston.

Hawaii at sunset. Same craving for rest, but you want scenery with it. Volcanoes, waterfalls, a coastline that looks different every ten miles. Hawaii asks for more days than a Caribbean island, because the flight is longer and there’s more to see once you land. Under a week feels rushed.

A safari. This is the one people say quietly, like they’re not sure they’re allowed to want it. You are. A safari is a trip people carry with them for the rest of their lives, and it’s also the one with the longest lead time. The good camps are small and they fill far ahead. If this is your answer, the daydream needs to become a plan sooner than the others.

Japan in cherry blossom season. You want beauty, order, and food you’ll talk about for a decade. You also named a season, which means you named a window. The blossoms run a few weeks and don’t check anyone’s calendar, so this trip gets built around the bloom, not the other way around.

Sydney or the Great Barrier Reef. You’re not scared of a long flight, and you want a big trip. Australia rewards time. Two weeks is where it starts to make sense. You didn’t fly that far to see one city.

A cobblestone street in Europe. You want to wander. Café tables, old doors, no plan past lunch. Europe is the answer with the most choices inside it, and which country and which month you pick changes the trip more than people expect.

Why “this weekend” matters

Nobody is flying to Kenya on Saturday. I know that. The reason I ask about this weekend instead of someday is that someday is where trips go to die. A weekend is concrete. It makes you picture the place instead of the obstacles.

And if the picture came easily, ask yourself how long you’ve been picturing it. A year? Three? The trips people regret are never the ones they took. They’re the ones they kept meaning to take.

Turning the answer into a date

Every one of the six has a season, a lead time, and a right number of days. I’ve sketched some of that above, but seasons shift, entry rules change, and prices move. I confirm the specifics for your dates before anything gets booked. That’s part of the job.

What I need from you is smaller than you think. Who is going. Roughly when you could get away. How many days you can steal. And which of those six pictures came to mind first when you read the question.

If your answer just reminded you of a trip you’ve been putting off, that’s what I’m here for. Tell me who is going, how many days you have, and where you saw yourself standing, and I’ll build the trip around that, whether it’s a few months out or a year and a half.
